What I want to be when I grow up!

When I grow up I want to be a choreographer and an activist and somehow combine those two professions. I have been dancing for a while and I found an interest in choreography when I was eight. After that I choreographed pieces for my acrobatic company that they performed at different places.

Also, when I was seven, I fell in love with philosophers and I studied them. From there I found activism and I got involved with my acrobatic company, which is an all woman company showing the world and community that women can be just as strong as men.

After that I decided that it would be interesting to try to include activism in choreography and show people the injustice in gender discrimination.

Choreography unit!!

Hello! Sorry I haven't posted in so long! In dance we just finished our choreographers unit which I thought was really interesting! I love choreographing pieces in dance and some of my pieces have been performed in other places including BAM! In this unit we learned about some African choreographers and learned a piece from Judith Jamison. I have included the dance below, we learned a variation of the dance, not the actual thing. I love this dance because it is very beautiful and I have never done this type of dance style before.

My acrobatic performance; Magma Mix

Yesterday I had my acrobatic performance at my studio LAVA. It was really fun. We had a packed house which was nice and we had great choreography! The theme of this performance was the sky. We had a lunar eclispe piece, a star piece in which we used laser pointers to resemble the stars. We also made cloud surfing pieces based on somebody in Norway who goes up in a plane and 'surfs the clouds'. Finally we had a guest  choreographer (Lissa) who was a Magma alumna. Overall, the performance was really fun, although we didn't have much dance in the performance. It was still a great experience because I was able to help choreograph pieces and get more used to performing in front of an audience. Below are some pictures that were taken during the performance!

West Side Story

West Side Story is an amazing musical produced a while ago that is still being talked about today. Many people have wrote books and articles (including my mom!) About one particular person; Jerome Robbins. Who is he? The directer of West Side Story. It doesn't sound like a very big deal, but he is very famous for his works.
Why do people love West Side Story?

  • It includes many problems we face. It is basically gang violence and the different sides people take. It is also a migration story about Puerto Ricans who move to the city.
Below I have included one of my favorite dances for the musical! Hope you enjoy!!

In dance class!!

Right now in dance class we are working on an amazing dance called "I See Fire." It is a great dance including many interesting elements that we learned in our dance unit. We are performing it at the winter arts festival along with all the other dance classes!! We are also starting our new unit this week. This unit is Jazz dance. I am really looked forward to it because other than last year in dance, I have never really danced Jazz before!! I have attached a clip below of a weird Jazz dance for people who don't really know what it is. Hope you enjoy!!

This is a group dance on the TV show 'Dance Moms.' The style is Jazz funk:

Flashmob!!

One of my favorite types of dance is a flash mob. What I love about these is that though they are just regular dances they surprise everyone around them. I love watching flash mobs and would love to be in one sometime. On top of that people just break into dance! Which I think is so cool to watch and to experience. The only thing about flash mobs is that they take a lot of work. Everyone needs to be coordinated and at the same location at the same time. My favorite flash mob is the one that really got flash mobs started (below). My favorite part of this video is one, the dance moves are awesome. Two, the video shows the looks on peoples faces as they watch the dance.

My First day of Lava for this year!

Today was my first day of training for acrobatics. I work in such an amazing space with such talented people at this company. This place is like a second home to me. We work on moving around the space and working in ways I could have never learned elsewhere. I have learned to trust people at this company. We have fun, laugh, and some of my greatest memories are in the walls of the studio. On the first day we worked on a little trapeze but mostly just warming up and getting back into shape. Usually we work on some pretty cool things. We learned how to choreograph pieces and how to move in relation to sound. We work together using no obstacle but each other.

Another reason I love this group is that it is an all women performing company that supports feminism and showing the world how strong women can be. I am in Magma, the junior company of Lava, another all-women performing troupe.

Though I have a lot of fun at Magma, we are also a professional company. I help teach a kid's class and we also have training for three hours where we work really hard to stay in shape. We have performances around the city that we train and rehearse for. We also host a benefit/ performance at our studio to bring the community together. We invite dance clubs and organizations to come perform. It is called Magma Mix. Maybe MS: 447 could perform there!!

Lava is such and amazing place to work- Lava is my dance experience!

Below is a video about my company... If you look closely you can see me in it!
